Karate is a great spectator sport as well as a very effective tool for self defence. It has become very important to learn to defend yourself from violent physical assaults. The street crimes are rising high due to increasing poverty and global economic downturn.
The best feature of karate for self defence is that it places special emphasis on the deflection of attacks. In most of the cases the offenders throw straight punches or knife lunges. Only very stupid fighters will make the mistake of attacking in an arc. Thus to defend yourself from these straight attacks, step aside to get out of the way of the attack and strike back at the arm that attacked you. Then quickly hit the attacker at the belly, lower back, or ribs. These strikes are very difficult to defend against. The scoundrel will be forced to submit or run away.
Attacks on the head and facial area are a vital part of all martial arts. Therefore everybody expects these attacks and is mentally prepared to defend himself against these strikes. Your assaulter will also be expecting these attacks. Therefore instead of aiming for the head, block his attack with one hand and throw a powerful punch at his sternum. Solar plexus will be the target area. An effective punch at this area will incapacitate the offender.
Chances are that the attacker will be charging forward at you while attacking. In such a situation thrush a strong front kick into his stomach or solar plexus. Ball of the feet is used to hit the target area. A powerful kick at the right place will send the offender on the ground in agony.
Care should be taken while kicking the person who is charging at you. You should not kick at his groin. When a person is charging, he leans forward due to centre of gravity. A kick at the groin in such a situation will make him lunge at you. You might lose balance and fall down.
Some basic training equipment is needed when training for karate. The beginners will need shin pads, groin guards, karate uniform, boxing gloves and head gear.
